platinum teapot with iron handle
h 12cm without handlethis teapot is made from an iron-rich clay
from the Czech republic.
I get it in unrefined state directly from the deposit
and refine it at my studio,
leaving a lot of small and medium size particles of
quartz and limonite (a type of iron ore) in the clay.
the shape of the teapot is thrown on my
Japanese-style kickwheel and not trimmed at all,
meaning that nothing is taken away
in the foot or lower wall area of the vessel.
this gives it a distinct look, with a particular foot shape
reminiscent of simple Indian pottery.
after bisque firing, a glaze containing a high percentage
of metallic oxides is applied and fired at 1250°C.
it is semi- matt-metallic and has a structured surface,
almost like wrinkles.
on top of this, the platinum overglaze is applied
with a small brush and the piece is fired for a third time,
at 750°C.
the platinum overglaze contains the actual precious metal
