tenmoku slip chawan

tenmoku slip chawan

Ø 16 - 14,5cm

this teabowl is made from an iron rich stoneware clay
from the Czech republic.
I get it straight from the deposit
and refine it at my studio,
extracting only the larger
mesh size pieces
of limonite (a type of iron ore) and quartz.
the shape of this bowl is not a classic tenmoku shape,
it is closer to the Oribe guro style.
after drying, the piece was partially coated with porcelain slip
and subsequently two layers of tenmoku glaze were applied.
this resulted in a thick glaze coat and caused the glaze
to peel back in some places to reveal a different coloured slip.
one side of the bowl displays a striking accidential decoration
that resembles a face
