onggi kyusu with maplewood handle
h 9cma small teapot with the handle attached sideways,
in this case made from maplewood.
kyusu is the japanese term for this type of teapot,
but the glaze I used here is a korean-inspired onggi glaze,
made from only two ingredients, red clay and sandy soil
found in deciduous forests. this soil contains a fair amount
of organic material which burns to ash in the firing
and thus acts as a flux for the glaze.
the glaze displays particularly nice crawling on the shoulder
of the piece.
the lid is set in and completes the shape seamlessly
