german chawan with tenmoku glaze
Ø 14cma large specimen of the german chawan.
this type of bowl cannot be fired standing on its foot,
because the floor of the container is very thin and would
not support the walls. it has to be supported around the
lower edge with little wads of clay topped by shells.
in this piece the fireclay wads have caused the rim
of the bowl to distort and take on an almost
triangular shape
