german chawan with tenmoku glaze
Ø 13cmintroducing the german chawan.
this vessel is for drinking powdered green tea and
its shape is reminiscent of traditional japanese teabowls.
what is different, is the foot. it is not created by trimming
surplus clay from the base of the bowl, but is added later
as a coil and pinched into its characteristic wavy shape.
this is the german aspect of the chawan, because it is
borrowed from the earliest stoneware made in Germany
in the town of Siegburg around the 15th century.
that type of ceramic often had a similar foot, especially
the cups and jugs.
in this chawan, the foot is rather small and glazed over
with a black tenmoku glaze.
the rim of the bowl has an undulating edge,
the result of throwing very soft clay on the kickwheel.
"chawan" is the japanese word for teabowl, it´s used
here to signify that a bowl is meant to be used for the
japanese tea-ceremony
